Located outside the city of Lusaka, Shantumbu is a group of villages you can’t exactly find on Google maps. It was here we discovered a little preschool full of very hungry children, and began a parnership with a local pastor that became what we call the Shantumbu Preschool Project - a campaign to help feed and educate these small children. It was moving to see them nodding off during their lessons due to hunger - could you imagine one of your own children not being able to focus in school because they were so hungry!? One little girl was even nodding off due to hunger, unable to focus on her lesson. We were deeply moved by this sight and knew we needed to help. In correlation with this project, we have also been learning about the importance of education, and how it plays a crucial role in the elimination of child labor. On the topic of education ILO says, “Education is the first priority: 69 million primary aged children of whom more than half are girls, and 71 million children of lower secondary school age, are not enrolled in school. Many others who are enrolled are not attending on a regular basis, often because of long working hours or because of the costs of schooling. Providing access to a free, compulsory and quality basic education for all children to the minimum age of employment is a key strategy in tackling all forms of child labor.” Education is a powerful and proven way to help get kids out of labor and into school, and ultimately helping break the cycle of child labor. What we are doing in Zambia, and the Shantumbu Preschool, is exactly at the heart of breaking that vicious cycle. Join us today and make a difference in the lives of Africa's most vulnerable children!
